For many, August is the last month to get sunbathing and swimming in before temperatures cool down and summer vacations come to an end. Albeit warm, August typically is a month with good weather for outdoor activities, exploration, and summer festivals. Here are my 25 picks for where to travel in August.

anguilla - where to travel in august

Anguilla

Temperature/Season:

  • Temperature: 89°F high; 80°F low

  • Season: summer

  • Tourist Season: mid to high

Reason to Travel in August:

  • August is a good time for sunbathing in Anguilla due to the heat and dry weather. Swimming is also ideal as the water is warm. Hotel prices may decrease at this time making it a more attractive time to visit.

Four Seasons Anguilla is an upscale resort with posh modern rooms and beachy decor. Rooms offer furnished decks and soaking tubs, with a majority of rooms having ocean views. Three to five room villas are also available. There are three open-air restaurants onsite as well as a cigar lounge and adults-only pool.

  • August is considered the best time of year to visit Bora Bora because it’s the driest. There should not be more than about 2 inches of rain and temperatures are lower than average making it a very pleasant experience. Expect higher prices and more crowds.

Where to Stay: 

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort is a luxe tropical beachfront resort set on a lagoon and accessible by boat.   • Budapest is particularly beautiful to visit in August with long summer days and cooler summer nights. August is the warmest time of year to visit Budapest however the average temperature still remains pleasant at its highest. There’s a low chance of rain and showers tend to be brief.

Reason to Travel in August:

  • The warmest time of the year to visit Sofia is in August. It’s the last month of summer, so it will be warm and dry. You’ll get the most out of daytime activities this time of year as August is when Sofia sees its longest days of the year.

Where to Stay: 

InterContinental Sofia is a polished hotel near the Tsar Osvoboditel monument and the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Rooms are refined with muted decor. Request for a room that has a sitting area and/or cathedral views. Upgraded rooms receive complimentary snacks and city views. For a terrace and lounge, opt for the suite.

  • Festival season is in full swing in Burlington during the month of August. There are plenty of things to do outdoors so that you can enjoy the natural beauty of the destination.

  • Summervale: 8 weeks of local food and live music

  • Festival of Fools: downtown festival with over 100 performances with acrobatics, dancing, sketch comedy, and live music

Where to Stay: 

Though technically not in Burlington, I had to include this adults-only resort on this recommendation of where to stay. Twin Farms is a sophisticated, all-inclusive hotel inside a 1795 farmhouse. Lavish rooms feature Japanese, Tuscan, and Moroccan decor as well as sitting areas with fireplaces. Suites and cottages feature stone hot tubs. Onsite amenities include a spa with glass brick steam rooms, a fitness center, and tennis courts. Children ages 16 and up are permitted.

  • Temperature: 83°F high; 67°F low

  • Season: summer

  • In August, Cape May is warm enough for sunbathing and swimming. Expect higher crowds this time of year.

Casablanca is a sophisticated adults-only bed and breakfast inside of a quaint 1800s home. Rooms are refined with ornate wood bed frames and private bathrooms. Most rooms have fireplaces and some have free-standing tubs and/or antiques. Cape May Beach is a 5 minute walk from the B&B, which offers loaner beach gear to guests.   • The weather is tropical, but dry and agreeable in August in the Cook Islands. Daytime temperatures can be warm while evenings cool down. You may experience higher crowds at this time of year due to Australian and New Zealand winter breaks.

Where to Stay: 

Little Polynesian Resort is an adults-only resort on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Rooms have terraces and verandas while bungalows offer beach views. Snorkeling and kayaking are complimentary. Other onsite amenities include a restaurant, open-air bar, infinity pool, spa, and private beach access.

Edinburgh, Scotland

Reason to Travel in August:

  • August is the sunniest time to visit Edinburgh, and it’s also the main festival month of the destination. Though peak time for tourism, the city is alive with many festival highlights.

The Witchery by the Castle is a restaurant and luxury boutique adults-only hotel. There are 9 original suites on property each with unique quirk and charm. Situated in a collection of historic buildings at the gates to Edinburgh Castle, The Witchery restaurant offers dining in the 16th century oak-paneled "Original" dining room as well as the Secret Garden dining room with hand-painted ceilings. The restaurant allows children ages 10 and up.

Telluride, Colorado

  • August is a gorgeous month to visit Telluride if you’re looking for outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and paddle boarding. Though more popular to visit for its skiing, Telluride in the summer has sunshine, breeze, and blooming wildflowers.

  • Try to visit this region in late August, when most of the rainy season has passed. Following the rainy season, you can expect more lush greenery and flowing waterfalls.

  • Due to hotter temperatures, prices and crowds are likely to be lower in Ixtapa compared to July. Be sure to stay cool with pool dips and frequent hydration.

Where to Stay: 

Azul Ixtapa Grand All-Inclusive Suites & Spa is a lively hotel with clean, understated rooms and beach views. Upgrades include balconies and suites add living rooms, kitchenettes, and whirlpool tubs.
