Many people choose to fly straight into Cancún Airport, go through customs, then stay in that city because it’s more convenient than driving out several hours further to some of the other destinations within Quintana Roo after landing in Mexico.

Playa Del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is technically in the heart of the Riviera Maya, but there’s a large enough concentration of resorts to where is should be its own category. Playa del Carmen captures the relaxed, bohemian vibe of the Mexican Caribbean. Once a fishing village known as Xaman Ha, it is now a cosmopolitan beach town with some excellent food options. Playa del Carmen is a great spot for couples to enjoy.
The pedestrian-friendly coastal town has blocks of shops and restaurants as well as nightlife, such as laid-back beach bars and dance clubs. 5th Avenue is the most popular spot to window shop and explore. It’s known in the area for its shops, high-end restaurants, and luxury boutiques/resorts. Other local attractions include Mamita’s Beach Club, Cozumel Island, Chichén Itzá, Xcaret Park, and Sonora Grill. Several national and international golf tournaments, such as the PGA Tour, are hosted in Playa del Carmen, every year.

Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya is a stretch of Caribbean coastline on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The resorts that fall that I placed in this category are past Playa del Carmen and before Tulum if you’re heading south down the coast. Like many of the destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, the Riviera Maya has long beaches with turquoise waters and white sand.
Tourism is the primary attraction of this area with several all-inclusive adult-only resorts (including my favorite)! This is area is home to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (also known as the Belize Barrier Reef), which is the second longest barrier reef system in the world. It’s also home to Cenote Azul, one of the most popular open air cenotes - it’s open to the public and a popular place to swim and enjoy nature.
